First, you absolutely need to know about what you must avoid If you want to grow your business today.

If you really want to protect and grow your business, you absolutely must avoid using the same way of thinking you have used in the past. You have to pivot your business because:
 

The World As You Know It Is Gone…
 

You have problems that need new solutions with a new way of thinking. Be willing to “think the unthinkable”  and anticipate extreme scenarios. Examine your situation from either a state of survival or real growth - which ever fits your present day.

Here’s What To Do - Tip#1…
 

This is a 2 step tip…
 

Step I of Tip #1)
 

Be OPEN TO CHANGE your assumptions of what your customers NEED from you NOW. 

Confirm their needs.
 

Big 10
Get on the phone and talk directly to a minimum of 10 of your top customers. Ask them this
 one question…
 

What’s your biggest challenge right now... that you need help with?
 

Let them talk. Don’t interrupt. Drill down. Keep them talking by saying…
 

“Tell me more.”
“What do you mean specifically?”
“Why is that?” And so on.

 

It's critical that you take good notes - the success of your business depends on it.

 

Thank them for their input and let them know you will do you best to address their concerns quickly.

Step II (Tip#1)
Find a place to go to  be by yourself. Make it a different place from your regular place of business. The change of environment helps to refocus the brain.…

 

Before you start, Calm yourself.

 

I want you to do this little exercise now. It’ll only take a few seconds. Simply by breathing in through your nose to a count of 3; and out through your mouth to a count of 6. Do it for  a minute.
 

Try it now, i’ll wait... 

 

Breathe in through your nose 1-2-3. Now breathe out through your mouth for 6 seconds.
 

That’s it.…for 4-5-6. Do that for a minute and it will help you.

Now you’re ready to get started.
 

Take a pad of paper and a pen. No electronics. Putting your ideas on paper has proven to work.
 

Take your notes from Step I, your conversations with your customers, and create your strongest
vision ever.

Focus on what you can control, however; don’t limit yourself.
 

As a measuring stick... be like the engineers at mission control center during the Apollo 13 flight.
 

REMEMBER: they were given  a short list of articles to solve the carbon dioxide crisis in the lunar module:
plastic bags, canisters, various hoses and most important of all.…duct tape!
 

Running against the clock... they did it! 

You can do it too!

You need to anticipate what comes next week, next month, next 90 days. Take all the notes you have from Step I of this tip and use them here.

Ask yourself, what is the best way to service your customers now? What’s the 1 life saving action you can do
for them? What is needed to protect your company? How do you optimize your existing offering? What opportunity is in front of you that you did not see before? 

 

If you are in a survival mode: How much cash is your business burning? And how do you stop the cash
going out because you need cash. What is your most profitable product or service? What is the least?

If you don’t know, make a note to yourself to find out fast.

A war room enhances collaboration, communication Information flow, better problem solving and more responsible decision making. It creates a team spirit and a sense of togetherness.The whole idea of a war room is to gather all relevant people in a single location, in order to improve the decision-making process.

 

And to make sure what is actually being decided is the right thing to do. With the technology we have today,
a single location could be physical, VIRTUAL or some combination of both.

 

Get everyone together and brainstorm ideas. Maybe there is one that comes up allowing you to change the game. Think strategically, proactively, intelligently. You must optimize your systems first, before you explore new ways of doing business.

 

Focus on devising solutions. Think of value creation. Which solution delivers the best outcomes while sacrificing the fewest company resources. End every discussion with clear action steps.

 

Here’s How To Do It…Tip#2

 

Put together a diverse thinking crisis management team in your company that will have more ideas about possible solutions. Also, the crisis management team that is responsible for evaluating priorities weighing trade-offs and turning on contingencies, depending on the current conditions.

 

Communication with all your stakeholders is critical. When your whole team has visibility into your entire supply chain, from beginning to end, you'll be better prepared to recognize trends, predict pitfalls & problems and find the right solution.

 

Beware of treating the crisis in a single dimension. For example as an operational or systems problem only.

Many times the right answer has more than one aspect or side to it. It’s when we are able to step back and see the whole picture, that  the best solution is reached.

 

Does your business model fit today? Look at processes and automation. Ask your team the same questions you asked yourself in Tip #1. Also consider the worst-case scenario and discuss a solution for 40% reduction in revenue;70 % reduction.

When you’re done, you’ll render it all down to your battle plan. You create and drive  meaningful marching orders that will motivate your people to take action and align their efforts with a purpose that drives a sense of urgency.

When you come out of those meetings, take the leadership role and share what you know with the rest of your staff. Be honest with them give them the truth. Also tell them what you don’t know.

 

When you implement this tip…you’ll have more clarity and  confidence and courage to carry out your plan 
with all your people behind you.
